It is understood that the brief will involve all of John Lewis' online communications, including its online store and banner advertising.
It is not known if Agency.com, which has previously created digital campaigns for John Lewis, will pitch for the business.
Lowe London, which was appointed to handle John Lewis' above-the-line tasks in July 2006, is also understood to have worked on digital briefs for the retailer.
The news comes shortly after the appointment of Gill Barr, who joined John Lewis as the marketing director in June.
