The presenter of the easy listening station has said that he will not emulate the "laddish" mentality of Capital's Vaughan, Radio 1's Moyles, or the Pete & Geoff team who appear on Virgin.
Theakston was critical of the styles of his rival presenters, saying: "They ignore their audience and talk at them rather than to them. There's an element there of liking the sound of their own voice.
Instead, he sees BBC Radio 2 stalwart Terry Wogan as more of a role model.
He said: "It's that shouty laddish shtick that's old-fashioned and I think people have moved on from that Loaded way of doing things."
Whether Wogan would approve of Theakson is another matter. A couple of years ago he was exposed in a Sunday tabloid as having visited a Mayfair "bondage dungeon" where he paid a bargain price of £40 for the services of hookers.
Theakston will take over from Jono Coleman on Heart 106.2 next Monday. He was named as the new host of the breakfast show in January this year, following the production of a number of pilot shows, which the station said showed Theakston's affinity with listeners, particularly in the core audience of 25- to 44-year-olds.
Heart-owner Chrysalis will be hoping that Theakston can close the gap on Johnny Vaughan's Capital FM show, which, according to figures released by Rajar earlier this year, reached 1.13m listeners, up from 1.05m in the previous quarter.
Heart's outgoing team of Jono and Scott were in second place for breakfast audiences, but their audience dropped from 797,000 to 748,000.
Kiss 100 FM's Bam Bam Breakfast overtook Magic FM to take third place, adding 90,000 listeners to hit 711,000 and closing fast on Heart.
Theakston was most recently seen on screens hosting Channel 4's 'The Games' earlier this month.
