Theakston to replace Jono as co-host on Heart breakfast

LONDON - TV and radio presenter Jamie Theakston is to replace Jono Coleman as co-presenter of Heart 106.2 FM's flagship London breakfast show with Harriet Scott from Easter this year.

Coleman will leave the station and it is not known if he has another job to go to.

The appointment of Theakston follows the production of a number of pilot shows, which the station said showed Theakston's affinity with listeners, particularly in the core audience of 25- to 44-year-olds.

The news of Theakston's arrival follows the latest Rajars last week, which showed Chrysalis will be hoping that Theakston can close the gap on Johnny Vaughan's Capital FM show, which reached 1.13m listeners, up from 1.05m in the last quarter.

The teaming of Jono and Scott stayed second, but their audience dropped from 797,000 to 748,000 as Kiss 100 FM's Bam Bam Breakfast overtook Magic FM to take third place, adding 90,000 listeners to hit 711,000 and closing fast on Heart.

Steve Parkinson, Heart FM managing director, said: "Jamie is an established personality who has been part of our listeners' lives for a long time."

Heart 106.2 rebranded last autumn and the change of presenter continues the station's makeover. Chrysalis will be supporting the new show with a heavyweight marketing campaign.

Theakston said: "I can't wait to get stuck in -- it will be great to be on Heart 106.2 and great to be back in radio."

Theakston has previous radio experience, with a show on BBC Radio 1 between 1999 and 2002, as well as working on the then GLR and Radio Five Live.

He is better known for his TV presenting duties, which include shows such as 'Live & Kicking', 'Top of the Pops' and most recently 'The Games' on Channel 4. He has also appeared in two West End plays, 'Art' and 'Home & Beauty'.

Parkinson said: "Jamie Theakston hails the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Heart 106.2, and this move presents a real opportunity for Heart 106.2 to create a market-leading breakfast show and station.

"With the station's on and off-air imaging now refreshed and updated for our 30-something audience, this signing completes a major stage of Heart 106.2's ongoing evolution."

Scott joined the breakfast show in the summer of 2003 after the departure of Coleman's co-presenter Emma Forbes.
