Based on Val McDermid's acclaimed crime novel, the taut thriller follows events around the disappearance of a 13-year old girl in 1963 and stars Juliet Stevenson.
It debuted with a 26% share of viewing, topping BBC One's repeated eccentric police series, which had 5m viewers and a 22% audience share during the 9-10pm slot. Last week 'New Tricks' won the primetime slot with 5.4m viewers and a 23% share.
BBC Two rounded out the top three with its documentary 'Amazon', presented by adventurer Bruce Parry, which pulled in 2.3m viewers and 10% share.
Revealing the effect of spiralling house prices, Channel 4's 'The Price of Property' managed 1.3m viewers and a 6% audience share. An additional 69,400 viewers caught it on Channel 4+1.
For Five, the final instalment of 'Extreme Fishing with Robson Green' drew 1.1m viewers and a 5% share in the 9pm slot.
