The audience hit a one-minute peak of 26.6 million viewers, an 84% share of all people watching television at home.
England’s previous crunch matches, such as the 1990 World Cup semi-final against Germany and the 1986 quarter-final against Argentina, were broadcast on both ITV and the BBC.
Viewing topped the peak audiences achieved by England’s Euro 2004 quarter-final loss to Portugal (24.7 million), by last Saturday’s quarter-final win over Sweden (19.6 million) and by the previous round’s match against Colombia (24.4 million) on 3 July.
Last night’s game also set a record for ITV’s streaming service ITV Hub, which received 4.3 million simulcast requests, up from 3.3 million for the Colombia match.
