Schmitt was previously publisher of the hobby and outdoor portfolio in IPC Country & Leisure Media. She succeeds Caroline Evans as publisher of Essentials and Vicky Cairns as publisher of Practical Parenting. The two left IPC before Christmas, with Evans joining Hachette Filipacchi as publisher of Sugar.
Practical Parenting magazine itself has been moved from SouthBank's specialist portfolio into its women's lifestyle portfolio, alongside Essentials, Family Circle, and Woman and Home.
Linda Swidenbank, women's lifestyle publishing director, said: "Ilka's time in Country & Leisure Media has provided her with great experience across a range of consumer events, which will be invaluable as we develop our Practical Parenting Baby Shows."
In addition, Amy Culligan has moved from IPC South Bank to the company's TV listings division IPC TX, where she takes up the role of publisher of What's on TV. She was publisher of the home interest group at South Bank.
The role of publisher on What's on TV replaces the vacant role of brand development manager.
Charlie Meredith, What's on TV publishing director, said: "I have known Amy for several years and I am delighted that she is coming to work on the brand at such an exciting time in its history, when significant investment in marketing, combined with a reduced cover price, is set to drive IPC's biggest title to even greater things."
