Interbrew bids for Beck's

LONDON - Belgian brewer Interbrew is to bid for the Germany beer brand Beck's. It is believes to be in competition with the UK's Scottish & Newcastle and Anheuser-Busch of the US.

In a statement, a spokesman for Interbrew said, "Interbrew is interested in bidding for Beck's because Germany is an important beer market and Beck's is a very nice beer brand."

Beck's, which was founded in 1873, is Germany's fifth-biggest brewery and sells its beer in 120 countries.

An Interbrew bid would likely run into fresh regulatory trouble. The Belgian brewer is already facing problems with its acquisition of Bass. A compromise is understood to have been suggested that could see Interbrew sell Carling, the UK's biggest-selling larger.

Interbrew already owns the Stella Artois brand, which is one of the UK's biggest sellers and leads both Budweiser and Beck's.
