Unions offer surprise backing to Interbrew takeover of Bass

The two leading trade unions in the brewing industry have given surprise support for Belgian brewer Interbrew’s £2.3bn takeover of UK rival Bass.

LONDON (Brand Republic) – The two leading trade unions in the brewing industry have given surprise support for Belgian brewer Interbrew’s £2.3bn takeover of UK rival Bass.

The TGWU and GMB general unions, traditionally in opposition of consolidation within UK brewing, have written to the UK Competition Commission saying they are confident Interbrew is committed to the industry and will protect lesser brands and niche beers.

TGWU general secretary Bill Morris said forced disposals of brands would weaken Bass and undermine employment. The union represents 85% of the workers in brewing and beer distribution.

Interbrew said it was delighted with the union support and pledged to keep job losses to a minimum.
