"Infinitesimally small" chance of London hosting 2016 Olympics

Figures close to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have responded to claims that London has been asked to host the 2016 Olympic Games instead of Rio, describing the chance of a venue transfer as "infinitesimally small".

A spokeswoman for the IOC also said that a return to London was a "non-starter and unfeasible".

The Evening Standard reported on Friday (9 May) that Olympic organisers have secretly been in talks with London to host the 2016 event, following reports that Brazil is severely underprepared for the Games.

Olympic bosses are said to be in panic over Rio’s lack of preparation, which is currently at 10% with two years to go. London was estimated to have been at 60% within the same timeframe.

John Coates, vice-president of the IOC, said at a press conference in April that Brazil’s preparations were "the worst I have ever experienced", and that a special taskforce has been put together by the committee to resolve the "critical" situation.

He added: "There is no plan B. We are going to Rio."

Contrary to this, the Standard’s source said: "The IOC is thinking is thinking 'What’s our plan B?' Obviously, the answer would be to come back to London. It’s very unlikely but it would be the logical thing to do."
