Independent on Sunday rules out tabloid in redesign

LONDON - The Independent on Sunday is to have an overhaul but it has confirmed that it will not follow the path taken by its daily sister title by going tabloid.

Independent on Sunday rules out tabloid in redesign

Changes to the Sunday broadsheet include a new 64-page colour arts magazine called ABC - Arts, Books and Culture, which will replace Talk of the Town, The Independent on Sunday's highbrow culture supplement. The new magazine will publish "the best in new fiction" and will interview leading artists about their work. The launch issue features a short story by Julian Barnes alongside an interview with David Hockney.

The broadsheet business pages will take on a tabloid format with an expanded media section, including media column and a diary. There will also be more dedicated space for news, features and personal finance.

The Sunday colour review supplement will be expanded with new columns on sex, relationships, street fashion, entertaining and motoring as well as expanded features on gardening, homes and interiors.

Ivan Fallon, CEO of Independent News & Media, said: "The exciting developments announced today reinforce Independent News & Media's commitment to The Independent on Sunday. The new magazine and compact sections build on the high-quality reputation our Sunday paper earned through its highly acclaimed war coverage and beyond."

The Independent dropped its tabloid edition on Saturdays completely in January, heightening speculation that it was to go completely tabloid to avoid the cost of bringing out both editions.

The Independent on Sunday was named the best designed newspaper in the world for the third-year running, environmental newspaper of the year for the second year and was shortlisted for its coverage of the Iraq war at the British Press Awards.

Year on year, The Independent on Sunday's circulation is down 5.35% in contrast to its daily sister, which is up 4.65% year on year. In January the Sunday broadsheet posted a circulation of 206,087, stable from the previous month, whereas the daily edition's circulation was up 4.65% from the previous month with a circulation of 248,876.

The new Independent on Sunday will be out on March 14 and will be supported by a radio campaign.
