Iain Martin, the paper's editor, said that the compact edition would contain all the authority and substance of the broadsheet while being more convenient in size.
Like The Independent, the compact Scotsman paper includes exactly the same content as the broadsheet paper with full coverage of Scottish, UK and international news, a full-colour sports section, a weekend section and The Scotsman colour magazine.
The launch comes on the back of recently conducted research, which found that readers would welcome the paper in the new format. This Saturday, readers will be asked to give their opinions via email, by questionnaire, on the web or by telephone on how they want to see the newspaper expand and develop.
The Scotsman becomes the third UK broadsheet newspaper to go down the tabloid route after The Independent and The Times. Both the national broadsheets have seen circulation increases since they downsized, up 4.7% and 3.8% respectively in the latest set of ABCs. This growth appears to have come at the expense of rival broadsheets The Guardian and Telegraph.
In the latest set of ABC figures, The Scotsman was up 5.9% from the previous month to 70,744. However, year on year, circulation figures are down 6.64%.
The Scotsman was launched on Burns Day in 1817 as a weekly compact newspaper.
