The move is part of a strategic growth into the production sector by IMG Media, which already owns sports programming firm TWI and documentary specialist Darlow Smithson Productions, which produced hits including 'Touching the Void'.
It is understood that IMG has paid between £25m and £30m for Tiger Aspect.
Tiger brings with it its wildlife programme division Tigress, as well as US-based production company TTP and Tiger Aspect Pictures, which was behind British movie success 'Billy Elliot' as well as 'Kevin and Perry Go Large'.
Peter Bennett-Jones, Tiger Aspect founder and chairman, said: "This deal will enhance our ability to make many more memorable programmes for broadcast in the UK and around the world through IMG's extensive international structure."
He added that the deal will also help efforts to explore "new media opportunities".
As well as new series of 'The Catherine Tate Show' and 'Robin Hood', Tiger Aspect is also behind CBBC hit 'Charlie and Lola', BBC One detective drama 'Murphy's Law' and 'Mr Bean'.
Alastair Waddington, IMG Media executive vice-president and chief operating officer, added that the acquisition "realises IMG Media's long-held ambition to become a multi-genre producer and we look forward to Tiger Aspect's continued success and growth, while maintaining its distinctive identity as a producer of top quality programming".
