Humour dominates in 50 best British ads of the year

LONDON - The famous British sense of humour has shone through in a list of the 50 best ads made by British ad agencies and production companies in the past year.

The showcase of British production featured predominantly humorous advertising, such as M&C Saatchi's "Viva La Grande Bretagne" spot for Kronenbourg 1664, produced by Gorgeous Enterprises and directed by Chris Palmer.

The list was compiled by the Advertising Producers Association and shown at a screening at the Victoria & Albert Museum last night.

Steve Davies, chief executive of the British Producers Association, said the selection of ads reflected the importance of humour. "It really comes out as the number one way to connect with the British public," he said.

He also said that the use of celebrities in advertising showed a lot of thought. Ads starring celebrities featured in the showcase will include TBWA\London's series of John Smith's ads starring Peter Kay, directed by Daniel Kleinman through Spectre; Wyclef Jean's Virgin Mobile spots, created by Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R, directed by Dougal Wilson from Blink Productions; and the Orange cinema spots starring Carrie Fisher, Spike Lee and Roy Scheider.

Davies said that the British liked to see celebrities used in a way that was somewhat self-deprecating. "The British public doesn't like big-headed celebrities," he said.

Also appearing on the list was the award-winning "cog" for Honda Accord, which has won a slew of awards for Wieden & Kennedy London. It was directed by Antoine Bardou-Jacquet through Partizan Midi Minuit.

The showcase is one of several events planned by the APA to promote British production. There will also be a presentation on special effects next week and a programme, run jointly with Bafta, in October where London's advertising creatives will compete in a film festival of three-minute Super 8 movies, called Straight 8.
