The advertisement is a continuation of Virgin Mobile's "be careful what you sign" campaign. The ad continues the story where Wyclef Jean thinks he is signing an autograph for a fan and instead signs a contract condemning him to life in a trailer park.
The latest spot features Wyclef's escape from his life in the trailer park, only to end up arrested by the sheriff and thrown in prison. One scene shows him showering with other inmates, when a burly prisoner asks Wyclef to pick up a bar of soap that is on the floor.
According to reports, the ad is now under investigation following complaints that it is homophobic and that it stereotypes the gay community.
Last week, the Independent Television Commission forced Yahoo! to re-edit an ad created by Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper after it received 15 complaints over claims that it, too, stereotyped gay men. That spot showed a naked man tied to a tree, being eyed up by a camp-looking man.
Virgin Mobile's advertising was created by Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R, with media for the £5m pre-Christmas campaign through Manning Gottlieb OMD.
The complaints come amid a flurry of anti-gay coverage in the media, following stories about the former Royal butler Paul Burrell and allegations of rape among other Palace staff.
Earlier in the year, a US advertisement for the soft drink 7-Up was pulled from television after a pressure group called Stop Prison Rape complained about the ad, which showed a man dropping a can of 7-Up, turning to camera and saying: "I'm not picking that up".
