Honda offers consumers free payment protection against redundancy

LONDON - Car manufacturer Honda UK is offering free payment protection against redundancy in a bid to encourage consumers to continue buying cars during the recession.

The scheme is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK car industry. Honda hopes it will boost consumer confidence when considering the purchase of a new car. The spring promotion is available on Civics and CR-Vs purchased on Honda finance from 1 April.

Honda will cover the monthly car repayments for up to a year in an attempt to safeguard customers that have been redundant for more than three months. Honda's UK sales fell by 21% over 2008, according to the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In the US, Ford this week launched a similar scheme to help consumers in the event of a job loss.
