Home shopping giant Freemans Grattan closes three sites and axes 1,000 jobs

LONDON - Home shopping giant Freemans Grattan is planning to close three of its UK business sites with the loss of 1,000 jobs, marking a further contraction in the traditional home shopping sector.

The company has confirmed that it is closing its contact centre in Bradford, its Peterborough warehouse and its Euston office. Employees in these areas will move into departmental and individual consultation.

Germany's Otto home shopping group, which owns Freemans Grattan, announced that it was restructuring the loss-making UK arm in January and began a consultation with unions and its 3,800 staff.

The review of the business is still ongoing and further job losses have not been ruled out.

Chief executive Koert Tulleners, who joined the group last July, instigated the business review. He has ruled out a sale of its brands, which include Oli and Freemans, but is expected to move some of the work back to Otto's Hamburg base to save money.

Decline in traditional mail order appears to be gathering pace and many home shopping brands, including Shop Direct and N Brown, are revising their business models.

Freemans rebranded at the end of last year with a new , logo and photographic approach as part of a shift in focus to online shopping.

Shop Direct, owner of Littlewoods, also announced a business review in January that could affect more than 1,200 jobs.
