Now holds lead over Heat but Closer is top performer

LONDON – IPC's Now has maintained its lead over younger celebrity upstarts such as Richard Desmond's New! but Emap's Closer is the best performer in the celebrity weekly market.

Although it is also faring well against nearest rival Heat, Now experienced a slight dip in circulation to 580,007 copies, falling 2% for the period and 1.80% year on year.

It is still selling 40,000 more copies than Heat, which was down 4.60% for the period to 540,556 copies and fell 4.40% year on year.

There was better news for Emap's Closer, which was the star performer in the celebrity market. Its circulation rocketed by 24.70% to 480,187 copies and the title was up a whopping 43.50% year on year.

Following closely behind is Northern and Shell's New! The title was up 20.80% to 403,864 copies for the period and up 19.10% on the year.

Sister title OK!, which continues to outsell rival Hello!, saw its circulation dip 3% to 553,777 copies but its overall figure was up 13.20% year on year.

Hello!'s sales for the period increased by 3.10% to 361,225 copies and it was up 4% on the year.

In the overall women's weekly group, H Bauer's Take a Break continued to dominate the top spot with its circulation breaking the 1m mark.

Take a Break sold 1,208,473 copies, a fall of 1.50% for the period. Its nearest rival, IPC's Chat, sold around half that figure -- 606,559 copies. It was marginally up by 0.30% for the quarter.

Evelyn Webster, the managing director of IPC Connect, said: "It's clear that Now's unique mix of celebrity news, gossip, fashion and life is second to none. The team has its finger on the celebrity pulse every week."
