Now sees off rivals as OK and Closer top celeb sector

LONDON - IPC Media's Now has maintained its dominance over Emap's Heat in the celebrity weekly sector, as Richard Desmond's OK! and Emap's Closer are the sector's best performers.

Now has not been hurt by younger upstarts such as Desmond's New! and Emap's Closer. It is up 0.3% for the last six months to 592,076 and down 6.1% year-on-year.

Heat is not far behind, posting a 0.2% increase for the past six months and 2.2% increase for the year to 566,731. Its stablemate Closer has been one of the star performers in the sector, jumping 15.1% to 385,036 in its second ABC.

At the more mature end of the celebrity market, OK's strategy of securing multimillion-pound exclusives continues to pay off. It jumped 16.7% in the past six months to 570,927 but was down 9.8% year on year. Rival Hello was up marginally by 0.8% but dropped a huge 35.9% year on year to 350,374.

Desmond's most recent celebrity launch New! was down 1.4% to 334,310 in its first ABC.

In the overall women's weekly group, H Bauer's Take a Break dominates the top spot with an unbreakable 1,227,305 readers. This was up 0.2% from last period and up 1.9% year on year. IPC's Chat is the nearest contender, up a strong 5% to 604,582 and 9.4% year on year.

Other strong performers were H Bauer's Bella, up 7.8% to 429,226, a rise of 0.3% year on year. The National Magazine Company's Best follows closely behind with 420,437, up 1.4% and 1% year on year.
