Sunny Delight was the most successful global brand launch of the Nineties, with a 5,224% rise in sales in 1999.
Hailed as the marketer's dream, sales of the sugary drink have now fallen by 34.6%, putting it at the top of the falling sales list published in Brand Republic sister title Marketing. It has fallen far behind energy drinks such as Lucozade, which has risen to number 19.
The sales of fruit juice brand Tropicana rose by 11.9%, while other healthy products have seen their sales jump. Danone Bio-Activa yoghurts were up 107% and Baby Organix was up almost 115%.
The rises mirror the changing eating and drinking habits of the UK's increasingly health-conscious consumers. The health market has received boosts from the crisis in the farming industry hit by BSE, foot-and-mouth disease and the debate over GM food.
Functional foods such as Danone Bio-Activa yoghurts, which claim to aid digestion and organic foods, have become increasingly popular. Sales of Provamel, a range of products including yoghurts and juices with added vitamins, have seen sales rise by 48%.
However, even the health foods can not stop the traditional giants. Coca-Coca remains the nation's leading brand with estimated UK sales of £665m-£670m.
