Gumtree.com promotes Monro to UK managing director

LONDON - Local classifieds website Gumtree.com has promoted Doug Monro from head of operations to managing director, succeeding Michael Stephanblome.

Monro, who takes over with immediate effect, will be responsible for the strategic development of the Gumtree , overseeing the portal's 'Cool Features', community support and marketing development.

He began his career as finance manager at Unilever UK, before being made a management consultant at Bain & Company, the management consultant firm, and more recently, head of strategy at online auction site .

He said: "At the moment, we're busy growing the site from London into new cities in the rest of the UK and internationally. The fantastic team at Gumtree are in a great position to grow the community and driver greater awareness."

Gumtree.com, which was founded in London in 2000 by Michael Pennington and Simon Crookall, and later acquired by eBay in May 2005, initially targeted Australians and New Zealanders looking for house sharing in London.

It has since spawned communities wanting to buy and sell goods, meet friends and partners in Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
