The significant jump in the website's users coincided with the launch of its US-focused section, Guardian America, but the Guardian credits its growth to a strong news and sports agenda during the month, as well as the relaunch of its media, money and society sections.
Guardian Unlimited, which includes and , reported an increase of around 1.7m unique users to 18.4m during October and 169m page impressions, which was up from 158m the month before.
Mail Online regained second position in October, overtaking Times Online, which had been in second place in September.
The Daily Mail online network, which covers and , posted 13.5m unique users for the month, up by almost 2m from the 11.7m users recorded in September. Its page impressions also rose to 108m, up from 94m the month before.
Times Online, which includes and , registered 12.4m unique users in October, a slight decrease compared to the 12.5m users posted the month before. However, its page impressions rose to 87.8m from 84.2m recorded during September.
stayed above the 10m barrier it passed for the first time during September and overtook the Sun Online to claim fourth place. The Telegraph registered 11.1m unique users or an increase of around 500,000, while its page impressions rose from 98m posted in September to 102m in October.
The Sun Online network, which covers , and , fell to 9.2m unique users during October, down from 10.7m in September. Its page impressions also fell to 195m from 216m the month before.
