Grand Designs overtakes Attenborough with 4.2m viewers

LONDON - Channel 4's 'Grand Designs' pulled in 4.2m viewers, up around a million on last week, taking it ahead of BBC One's David Attenborough series, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The property show, this week focusing on a house in Brittany built from old tyres and mud, won the primetime 9pm-10pm slot with 4.2m viewers and a 17.5% share. Including Channel 4+1 figures it reached 4.4m viewers.

It pulled ahead of BBC One's 'Nature's Great Events', which dropped 700,000 viewers to 3.7m and a 15.7% share of the audience.

Last night's instalment of the David Attenborough series followed the struggle of a single pride of lions to find sustenance in the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania.

ITV1's FA Cup football coverage of Middlesborough's 2-0 win against West Ham came in third in the ratings battle with 3.2m viewers and a 13.6% share of the 8pm-10pm audience.

BBC Two's 'The Rise of the Superchef', charting how celebrity chefs such as Delia Smith, Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver built their empires, netted 1.9m viewers and a 7.8% share of the 9pm-10pm audience.

Five's drama 'Minder', starring Shane Richie, drew 1.5m viewers and a 6.4% share of the audience.

Later in the evening 'Desperate Housewives' returned to Channel 4 with 2.3m viewers and a 12.9% share of the 10pm-11pm audience. Including Channel 4+1 it reached 2.4m viewers.
