Lane Fox, who co-founded Lastminute.com, was asked by the last Government to help get the 17m people in the UK who did not have access to the internet online.

Prime minister David Cameron has asked her to continue her Race Online 2012 campaign and has also given her additional responsibilities related to the coalition government's efficiency agenda.

She will sit on the Efficiency Board, which oversees the Government's efficiency and reform programme and is co-chaired by Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude and chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander.

She will advise on how efficiencies can best be realised through the online delivery of public services across government, including the transformation of the public services portal Directgov.
