Gore brings user-generated content channel to the UK

LONDON - Former US Vice-President Al Gore has signed a deal with broadcaster BSkyB to launch his user-generated content channel Current on Sky in the UK and Ireland.

The deal was announced today by Gore, Current's chairman, and James Murdoch, BSkyB chief executive, and will provide Current's first presence outside the US in its first step to creating an international media network.

Current plans to deliver a channel specifically designed for the UK and Irish markets.

Viewers in these markets will be able to submit their video segments via Current's and, if selected for broadcast, the content may also be shown on Current's US network, and in future territories earmarked for Current's expansion.

Gore said: "We are grateful to be working with BSkyB in our first international venture. This is a big step in fulfilling Current's mission of sparking a global conversation among young adults.

"Bringing our viewer-created content model to the UK and Ireland will give millions of young viewers the opportunity to not only watch, but also to create, television programming that is relevant to them."

The channel launched in August 2005 in the US and contains short-form, non-fiction programming, called "pods", which are a few minutes long and which explore the issues of interest to a youth audience, including technology, fashion, music and videogames, the environment, relationships, spirituality, politics, finance and parenting.

In the US, an estimated 30% of the network's content is created by viewers.

The UK agreement will allow Current TV to reach up to 22m more viewers in 8.2m households.

Over the past year, Current has grown across the US market by 70%, from 17m to nearly 30m homes.

Murdoch added: "Current TV is bringing the web's sense of empowerment to television for the first time. It has a uniquely collaborative approach to working with viewer producers that stands out among other platforms for user-generated video.

"As a first step towards Sky's own moves in this fascinating field, we're pleased to help give a voice to millions of young people throughout the UK and Ireland."

Gore has recently been touring Europe with a presentation based around his bestselling environmental book and movie 'An Inconvenient Truth'.
