Google brings local listings and mapping service to the UK

LONDON - Google has launched two new search services in the UK, offering local listings together with mapping services for users searching in their area.

offers users local information including business listings and related web pages. It provides local business data from Yell.com, and local information from Google's index of more than eight billion documents. Users can search for postcode or area, street name, London Underground station or airport.

For example, users in Fulham, London, searching for a local fish and chip shop can enter a keyword and postcode to receive local listings. Results are accompanied by a phone number, street address and links to related websites.

lets users find local information, navigate through maps and get directions. The service is integrated into Google Local UK so that users searching for local information can see the location of their search results on a map.

Users can also uses Google's text messaging service, Google SMS to access information. Users can text a search query to 64664 for results. The service works on all major UK mobile operators.

Nikesh Aurora, vice-president of european operations at Google, said: "Google Local UK combines business listings and relevant information from across the web to deliver a powerful and easy-to-use source of local information."

He added: "Google Local UK also enables Google AdWords advertisers to reach customers searching for businesses, products and services in their area."
