Good month/bad month

Internet shopping is growing at the fastest rate in six years, defying the gloom seen on the high street. Online spending on retail purchases rose by 35 per cent to £14.7 billion last year as the number of UK internet shoppers rose to 22.6 million, according to Verdict research.

A welcome development for search marketers this month as the Internet Advertising Bureau launched a Search Help Centre, bringing together Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! to detail answers to common search marketing issues. The centre aims to offer a jargon-free guide to search marketing.

Chelsea fans have a new home for their post-match rants and raves. Having set up a YouTube channel and engaged with other social networks, the London football club has added tools to its official website with a view to gaining more feedback from users and encouraging interaction between fans.

The downside to YouTube's popularity became clear in a US court ruling that Google must divulge the viewing habits of every user who has ever watched any video on YouTube. The ruling comes as part of YouTube owner Google's legal battle with MTV-owner Viacom over allegations of copyright infringement.

eBay was ordered by a French court to pay EUR38.6 million in damages to the luxury goods group LVMH for negligence in allowing the sale of fake bags, lipsticks and designer clothes. The fine is the biggest eBay has faced in Europe.

O2 had trouble fulfilling its promise to upgrade subscribers to the new 3G iPhone. Thousands went online and tried to upgrade but the O2 website failed to cope with the overwhelming demand. Consumers vented their anger on community and message boards. Many had received emails encouraging them to go online to buy the new iPhone.
