GirlGuiding UK modernises image with magazine redesign

LONDON - Girlguiding UK, the voluntary youth organisation, has redesigned its membership title, Guiding Magazine, as part of its moves to modernise its image as it approaches its centenary year.

Guiding Magazine, which has a circulation of 80,000, says the redesign will see the magazine undergo a dramatic change in look, feel and content to make it more topical and relevant to the issues affecting Girlguiding UK's 500,000 members.

The magazine has existed in various forms since 1914, when it was called Girl Guide Gazette. The most recent name change was in 1983, when it changed its name from The Guider to Guiding Magazine. It is a monthly, subscription-based membership magazine, with issues costing £2.

Wendy Kewley, Guiding Magazine editor, said: "The aim is to give our readers greater ownership of the magazine by including more reader-driven articles, interviews and opinion pieces. We want to give them a read that's informative, entertaining and provocative."

As part of its redesigning process, Girlguiding UK appointed Keith Elliot from design consultancy PMA as its external consultant. They also asked its members up and down the UK about what they wanted the content and look of the new magazine to be.

The changes are part of a wider communications initiative to reposition Girlguiding UK as a more vibrant, modern and relevant organisation as it celebrates its centenary in 2010.

The redesign of Guiding Magazine will be unveiled on April 1.
