The three-day opportunity is part of the biennial CircusFest at London’s Roundhouse, which starts today (28 March) and lasts for five weeks.
Alex Meder of Magic Mirrors is behind the project. The company agreed to donate a 16m-diameter mirror tent for use as a focal point of CircusFest, on the condition that between six and ten 18-25 year-olds were given the opportunity to gain training and experience as crew members assisting in the build and dismantling of the tent.
Meder said: "It’s a great opportunity for us to help young people interested in events crewing to gain some practical experience. For their part, the volunteers will learn valuable skills and gain a huge sense of achievement in knowing that they have helped to build and take down this traditional wooden tent."
Steve Kearney, principal consultant for Gallowglass Health & Safety, is co-ordinating all aspects of the training. Gallowglass has also donated uniforms and personal protection equipment to the project.
Kearney said: "This opportunity could potentially provide the young volunteers with a springboard to real work, and we’ll be looking to help them in every way we can. They’ve received training in manual handling and health and safety, and are being overseen by an experienced operational team from Magic Mirrors during the actual build and de-rig."
