Future boosts computing portfolio with What Laptop buy

LONDON - Future Network has continued its recent acquisitive streak and bought What Laptop magazine from its current owner Crimson Publishing for £650,000.

Future's chief executive Greg Ingham said that there were "great synergies between the readerships and advertising bases" of What Laptop and Future's PC Plus, PC Format and T3 titles.

What Laptop, a monthly launched in September 1999, is the leader in the portable computing sector and has a July-December 2003 ABC of 25,107.

Future anticipates that all of the magazine's five staff will transfer to its London offices. The first issue to be published by Future will be the February 2005 issue, on sale in January. It does not plan any major changes for the title.

In August, Future spent £2.5m on the acquisition of PC Zone and Computer & Video Games magazines, and the latter's website, from Dennis Publishing.

Computer & Video Games magazine was suspended following the acquisition. A spokesman said today that the website continued to operate but the magazine was still indefinitely suspended while the situation is being evaluated.
