LONDON - The Financial Times is launching a Facebook application offering students a free subscription to FT.com that they can share with their friends.

FT launches Facebook application for students

The FT student application will be made available internationally through selected Facebook college and university groups, where only current students will be able to access the offer.

Those using the branded application will be invited to share it with their friends, who will be automatically vetted to see whether they are eligible to receive the offer.

Students will be allowed to apply for a free annual subscription a maximum of four times and will be able to display their membership of FT.com on their profile page. The subscription is worth £98.99 per year in the UK, $109 in the US and €119 in Europe.

'This application is part of our ongoing efforts to reach a new generation of readers who we hope will become lifelong fans of the FT,' said Ien Cheng, publisher and managing editor of FT.com.

The Facebook application follows the FT's launch of a branded social networking site for senior executives in the media, telecoms and technology industries.
