LONDON - Friendster, the online social network, has started allowing users and programmers to create applications that work on its own and rival sites, as it bids to entice more traffic.

Friendster had already announced its support for the Google-led OpenSocial initiative, which is developing a set of common programming standards aimed at allowing applications to run across multiple social networks.

Friendster has now released the software tools that allow outside programmers to adapt games and other functions made for other social networks.

By signing up to OpenSocial, which is supported by News Corporation and Yahoo, programmers can make their applications work on multiple sites with a minimal amount of difficulty.

Friendster's use in the US has fallen in recent times, at the expense of newer social networks like Facebook, but the site is still popular in Asia, a key market for US sites looking for high growth areas.
