Freeview retune turns to chaos

LONDON - Websites set up to help the retuning of Freeview boxes have crashed under the weight of demand from confused consumers.

Freeview retune turns to chaos

Freeview's website crashed on Tuesday, while a second site, set up to guide viewers through the retuning process, failed yesterday morning. Freeview's helpline was also receiving 200 calls a minute from consumers seeking advice.

More than 20m digital TV set-top boxes need to be retuned to maintain access to TV and radio channels. The process will ensure that Five becomes available to more homes and that high-definition TV channels can become available on the platform.

Disgruntled viewers have also criticised Freeview for a lack of clarity in marketing the retuning process, accusing it of failing to publicise the changes widely enough or give sufficient notice.
