Free beer and burger for Reading and Leeds guests

The organiser of Reading and Leeds festivals will give the 160,000 weekend ticket holders a free pint and burger, saying he will pay for them himself if necessary.

Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, said he was making the commitment because he was unable to reduce ticket prices.

He said: "Every weekend ticket holder will get a free beer and burger as part of their ticket price. Money is tough, up and down the country, particularly for the Reading and Leeds audience [who are] young people.

"I can't reduce the ticket price but I can work with my sponsors and my suppliers and give something back."

Benn said he was working with festival sponsors to fund the offer, but if that is not possible he will pay for the beers and burgers himself. "I have no idea how I am going to make it work," he said. "I'm obviously going to try and get my sponsors to help me, but if they don't I'll pay for the thing myself."

The line-up for this year’s festivals will be announced this evening (12 March) and tickets go on sale at 7:15pm.
