Barnes, currently managing editor at Sky channels Sky One, Two and Three, has been appointed as programme director for digital at the channel. She will now take control of Five's digital strands Five US and Five Life.
Lisa Opie, Five's managing director of content, said: "[Hannah] has a very impressive track record in the digital marketplace and her experience and creativity will be a tremendous asset to Five.
"I'd like to thank Nick, who came in to launch the new digital channels and has done a fantastic job in firmly establishing them so quickly and successfully."
Five hired Thorogood, the former head of ITV daytime, as controller of its Five US and Five Life digital channels in August 2006.
Thorogood had left ITV in January 2006 after almost two years, which followed a four-year spell as head of lifestyle channels at UKTV.
Initially available on Freeview, followed by satellite and cable, Five Life and Five US are the first extensions to the main channel, which will celebrate its 10th birthday next March.
According to Five, since launch in October 2006 more than 15.4m viewers have turned into Five Life, with its first runs of 'Home and Away', and 15.9m have watched Five US, which features the 'CSI' franchises
