Five poaches BBC review chief Constable as director of strategy

LONDON - Five has appointed Charles Constable, the man responsible for leading the controversial BBC internal reviews, as its new director of strategy and executive board member.

Constable is currently project director for the content supply review, responsible for one of the four BBC internal reviews launched following the publication of Building Public Value last December. He is also the BBC acting controller of distribution.

Before that, he was project director for the Charter Review, leading the development and publication of Building Public Value, which announced 2,900 job cuts at the corporation and moving 1,500 staff to Manchester.

Constable joined the BBC as head of business management and implementation in 2001. He has also held senior strategic positions at Granada Media and United Broadcasting & Entertainment, the former TV business of United News & Media.

Jane Lighting, chief executive of Five, said: "Five is entering the most interesting phase of its development since its launch and it's critical we have someone with Charles' strategic vision in place to help us fully exploit the channel's full potential."

Constable said he saw the time as being ripe for for Five to develop strategic opportunities that will complemented its thriving core business.

"I'm looking forward to exploring every possibility that can add value to the channel," he said.
