A spokeswoman for Google confirmed that there was a fire at the London headquarters but said, via Twitter, "everyone safe, fire brigade doing their work".

Initial reports on Twitter suggest that the fire started from a barbeque on a roof terrace at the search giant's office next to Victoria train station. The building was evacuated but the flames were extinguished within a short time.

Reports also suggested that much of Google's workforce has decamped to a pub around the corner from the office. No one from Google UK was available for comment.
