Joe Hewitt, who developed Facebook for iPhone, said that "Apple does not have the means to perform thorough qualityassurance on any app".
He added that the App Store should be like the open nature of the web which he says "has served millions and millions of people quite well for a long time now".
Hewitt stressed that his views were those of his own but he is a prominent figure among developers, an engineer at Facebook and the main developer behind the social network's iPhone app.
Apple applies a rigirous approval procedure for apps submitted to its hugely popular App Store. But it has recently been criticised for allegedly operating an opaque process and rejecting some seemingly harmless apps.
