Facebook has acquired Snaptu, a UK-Israeli mobile app company, as part of its plans to expand the service globally across mass-market mobile devices.

The acquisition, which is expected to complete in a couple of weeks, is reported to be worth between $40m (£24.6m) and $70m (£43m), but no official figure has been disclosed.

Facebook, in a statement, said: "As part of our goal to offer people around the world the opportunity to connect and share on mobile devices, we’re excited to confirm that we recently signed an agreement to acquire Snaptu.

"As part of Facebook, Snaptu’s team and technology will enable us to deliver an even better mobile experience on feature phones more quickly."

Snaptu launched in 2007 and has offices in London, Tel Aviv and Silicon Valley in the US. It specialises in creating apps for feature phones, which use simpler technology than smartphones, and account for 95% of the global mobile market.

It already works closely with Facebook and, earlier this year, launched a new free Facebook mobile app, Facebook for Feature Phones, which works across 2,500 mobile devices.

Confirming the deal in a blog post on Saturday, Snaptu said: "We soon decided that working as part of the Facebook team offered the best opportunity to keep accelerating the pace of our product development."

Snaptu has also created feature phones apps for LinkedIn and Twitter.

Facebook, which recently passed 500 million users, has more than 200 million active users accessing the site via mobile devices. It claims that people using Facebook on their mobile devices are twice as active on the site than non-mobile users.
