Just metres from the park, The White Building will sit in Hackney Wick alongside Forman’s Fish Island, which claims to be the closet venue to the Olympic Stadium.
The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) is funding the venue which will be a cultural centre highlighting the area’s creativity. It will hold events for up to 200 people and will boast a canal-side seating area for outdoor events. It will also offer studio space for artists and a café.
The OLPC told Event it was hoping to open the centre in May, although a precise date hadn’t been set.
David Kohn Architects designed the 650sqm centre which is being built on the site of a derelict former print works. David Kohn, director of David Kohn Architects said: "The White Building will be a robust background for a host of exciting activities and events that will foreground the creative work that is made in Hackney Wick. Tall ceilinged and light spaces that open onto the canal side and give views of the Olympic site will contribute to the pleasure of being in this unique location."
Arts and education charity SPACE will run the centre on behalf of the OPLC with support from Bloomberg.
