My Event World - Lisa Lightfoot

I got into the events industry because I organised several events at University and again during my industrial placement year at Hewlett Packard. I really enjoyed the experience of seeing an event grow from an idea to the finished party or training session, so when I graduated I decided to look for a job in the events industry.

I have worked here since October 2003. I had been travelling and seeing the world but when we got back to the UK I needed a job. The role of venue co-ordinator at the RIBA caught my eye and I was lucky enough to be appointed. I was promoted to deputy manager in January 2008.

I was attracted to this particular role because I wanted to be part of the events industry and the idea of working in such a beautiful and historic venue really appealed to me.

Not many people know that RIBA has a fantastic roof garden, ideal for summer parties.

My worst experience at an event was at a wedding reception where quite a lot of vodka had been consumed by all the guests, the groom was dancing a bit exuberantly with an older guest and he accidentally sent her flying and she broke her arm.

If there's one thing I've learnt it's its all in the details so plan everything.

The best event I've been involved in was a wedding last year, they had a humanist ceremony on the stairs, it was the first time I'd looked after a ceremony and the whole day was beautiful. We now have a license so we're looking forward to lots more ceremonies.

If I could do it all over again I wouldn't change a thing.

The one thing I can't stand is disorganised people.

Outside of work I spend my time socialising, trying to improve my photography skills and practicing Reiki.

If money were no object I would go travelling to South America and the Far East for two years.

The one event I will never miss is my sister's wedding - I can't wait and she is delighted to have a team of event organisers at RIBA who can help her.

The recession has meant that we have many new clients attracted by our beautiful yet cost effective rooms.

The next 12 months will be interesting.

If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be the operations manager at The O2 as they have such a diverse range of events.

If I ruled the event industry I would ensure every conference organiser and trainer had a pamper package waiting for them back at their hotels. Clients never realise how exhausting this business is.
