She has 18 years of event industry experience, and currently works as a freelance events, marketing and communications manager with clients including Rich Insight and the UK Fashion and Textile Association.
Moon spoke to Event about her reasons for , fear of heights and Brit Awards experience.
I got into the event industry because I was a board level personal assistant (PA) looking for a new challenge, and so I sent my CV to the general manager of a five-star hotel.
Not needing a PA, he was looking for an event co-ordinator and asked if I would give it a go – that was back in 1997 and the rest, as they say, is history.
I have worked here since… April 2015. I decided last year, after 17 years in venues that it was time for a new challenge within the industry, and that this [freelancing and founding the EWL Club] was the perfect fit for me.
I was attracted to this particular role because… When I started in the industry back in 1997 I worked in event sales and operations, before moving to London and over to account management in 2004.
The opportunity to set up on my own business after years as a supplier, and to really expand my experience and creativity was really exciting, and I knew it would be a huge challenge. Event operation is my first love and I enjoy being back in the thick of the action.
I set up the EWL Club because I felt there wasn’t really anything out there that offered event planners the opportunity to meet once a month and have focussed discussions with other professionals on the latest industry topics and business challenges.
It’s going from strength to strength with a full table of event professionals every month, and I am excited to see where we are this time next year.
Not many people know that I am scared, no terrified, of heights, which made it quite a scary experience when I had a meeting at Sushisamba recently. Forty floors up in a glass lift isn’t a great experience at the best of times, and I had to take some time out to compose myself before my meeting.
The best event I’ve been involved in was... That’s a tough one as there are so many that I’ve been involved in and attended over the years. If I had to pick one though it would be this year’s Brit Awards.
I was volunteering at the event and even after all my years in the industry it was quite possibly the best experience I’ve had in a long time, that buzz and feeling of elation post-event will live with me for a while.
If I could do it all over again I would… I am really passionate about our industry so I wouldn’t change a thing. Everything happens for a reason and good and bad experiences are a part of the journey.
If I could tell a young 24-year old just starting out it would be: don’t try so hard, relax and be yourself, go with your gut and don’t rush into anything.
The one thing I can’t stand is people who don’t respond to emails. If someone has taken the time to type out a personal email to you then there’s really no excuse for not spending 30 seconds to respond, even if it is just to say thanks but no thanks.
Outside of work I spend my time eating out, going to gigs or visiting art galleries and museums. One of my all time favourite places in London is the National Portrait Museum and I love the Tudor and Elizabethan gallery. I am also really looking forward to visiting the Audrey Hepburn exhibition.
I am a keen runner and ran the London Marathon and Great North Run five years ago, and I’m not discounting doing it again before I get too old.
If money were no object I would… Apart from that old cliché of spending more time travelling the world, I would do my job for free and help more people who are starting out to find their place in one of the most rewarding industries there is.
If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be… No one. There are some amazing people in our industry however, I love what I am doing right now and want to see where this little journey takes me.
If I ruled the event industry I would have no rules, championing everyone to let their creative juices flow and just go for it… oh and maybe make sure that everyone responds to their emails.
