Altrincham-based sports events management company Xtra Mile Events is bringing the event back to life in conjunction with Trafford Council.

More than 8,000 runners are expected to take to the streets on 29 April alongside athletes, former Manchester United and City players and Emmerdale and Coronation Street stars.

The 26.2mile (42km) route will start and finish in Longford Park, passing both Old Trafford football and cricket grounds, the Imperial War Museum, Media City, Trafford Park and Dunham Massey.

Xtra Mile Events director Simon Hill said he intends to make the event one that will rival the best in the world.

"We want the Greater Manchester Marathon to become the largest in the UK outside London. There is no reason why this race shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath as New York, Paris and Berlin," he said.

Trafford executive councillor Jonathan Coupe said the event will "kick start" the build up for the region’s role as host borough for football for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

"I’m sure it will be a fantastic event for everyone taking part," he said. "It will be a great spectacle and one that I’m sure many people will turn up to watch."

The city’s last marathon was held in 2002, but has since been superseded by the Bupa Great Manchester Run as the city’s major running event.
