The research was carried out at Event 360, taking place at Tobacco Dock, a dedicated industry event for those working in B2B and B2C events, organised by Event and sister title, C&IT.
Delegates were entertained by Jonathan MacDonald, founder of Thought Expansion Network, in the event's opening session, where he invited attendees to do a live vote on which opportunities they feel will enable their mission to be best empowered.
The internet of things received 17.4% of the vote from the room, with empowered citizens clocking 13.8% of the vote and augmented/virtual experience coming in third place, with 12.7% of the vote.
Other options that delegates voted on included peer influence and expectations (12.3%), new channels (12.2%), crowd retail (7.3%), crowd funding (6.9%), 4D printing (6.8%), 3D printing (5.3%) and smart fabrics (5.2%). Attendees ranked options in order of what they felt was most relevant to least relevant.
Delegates were also asked 'how clear are you about the business you are really in', which was ranked between one and ten with one being not clear at all, and ten being very clear. Over one fifth (21.2%) voted at seven, and only 9.1% voted they were not clear at all (voting one). Around 38% voting at the lower end of the scale (between one and five).
MacDonald also spoke on the topic of kinetic architecture, a concept through which objects are designed to allow parts of the structure to move, without reducing overall structural integrity.
