LONDON - The London Evening Standard is selling issues for 10p today in a bid to spread the news that its rival thelondonpaper will close next month.

The newspaper, which was still carrying its cover price of 50p, was being flogged on newsstands for the reduced price carrying the headline ‘Free London paper to close'.

The Evening Standard is expected to benefit from extra ad revenue as well as increased circulation after the closure. Industry experts have gone as far as predicting the London Lite will also close in coming weeks as it records loses similar to that of thelondonpaper.

The Evening Standard was recently bought by Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev. It has a circulation of 225,158 compared to thelondonpaper's 500,000 and the London Lite's 400,000.
