End beckons for RI:SE as Bowman prepares to leave

LONDON - The end of 'RI:SE', Channel 4's struggling breakfast show, came a step closer today with the news that Edith Bowman is set to leave the show as its ratings plummet to a ratings score of zero.

Channel 4 has confirmed that Bowman will not be staying on at the show when her contract ends next month. However, it said that it "looks forward to working with Edith in the future". Whether this means Bowman might return on some future 'RI:SE' is anyone's guess.

The broadcaster said Bowman's co-host Iain Lee will continue to present the show and a replacement for Bowman will be found.

Bowman is the only remaining member of the original presenting line-up from the show's launch last year. The rest of the presenters -- including Mark Durden-Smith and Kirsty Gallacher -- left after the show closed for Christmas and ahead of its January relaunch.

Channel 4 took the decision to revamp the show after it consistently failed to draw more than 200,000 viewers. This compares with 'GMTV' and 'BBC Breakfast News', which pull in as many as 1m viewers each.

'RI:SE', which is now thought to be attracting less than 100,000 viewers giving it a zero Barb TV rating, is also regularly beaten by Five's 'Noddy' and 'Bear in the Big Blue House', which attracts 400,000 viewers.

Channel 4 is believed to have asked several production companies to pitch new ideas to fill its breakfast slot, which has never recovered since 'The Big Breakfast' lost its star presenters Johnny Vaughan and Denise Van Outen. Vaughan and Van Outen's talents often drew an audience of 1m, as much as the show's original team of Chris Evans and Gabby Roslin.

Although a far cry from its heyday, when it was axed, 'The Big Breakfast' still drew more viewers that 'RI:SE', with an audience of 300,000 when it was taken off air.
