Emap searches for new chief executive

LONDON - UK media group Emap has appointed headhunters to find a new chief executive to replace Robin Miller, who wants to retire by next summer.

Miller, who is also chairman of Emap, stepped back into the chief executive's role last summer following the resignation of Kevin Hand. Miller originally stepped down from the chief executive's role when he took up the chairman's job in 1998.

Hand was forced to quit Emap after his ill-fated attempt to launch Emap USA cost the company over £400m. Emap sold the division for less than half the £720m it paid for it two years earlier.

The company is expected to consider internal and external candidates for the role. Internal candidates include finance director Gareth Hughes and chief operating officer Tom Moloney.

Paul Keenan, chief executive of Emap Consumer Media, is also a popular choice among insiders to succeed Miller, following a rapid rise through the ranks in the last decade.

Emap, which announced its full-year results yesterday, confirmed it was out of the race to buy Pearson's business magazines including Investors Chronicle and The Banker.

The company posted pre-tax losses of £69m against a loss of £527m a year earlier. However, it admitted that it was seeing signs of a recovery in the advertising market.
