Smosarski has edited Smash Hits since 2002, when she transferred within Emap from entertainment editor on New Woman. Her CV also includes time spent as features director on Bliss.
The appointment comes four weeks before the publication of the magazine ABC figures for July to December 2004, which will reveal the state of play in the teenage monthly sector.
The January to June 2004 ABC figures show Sugar leading the market with 295,009, ahead of Bliss with 257,162 and CosmoGirl with 200,168.
In October, Hachette poached Bliss deputy editor Annabel Brog to edit Sugar.

Smash Hits deputy editor Lara Palamoudian has been promoted to acting editor. The pop music title is published fortnightly and has an ABC of 120,701.
The team for the launch of women's fashion weekly Grazia in February includes editor Jane Bruton and editor-in-chief Fiona McIntosh.
