Emap dismisses reports that Face editor is to be axed

LONDON - Emap has dismissed speculation that editor of The Face Neil Stevenson is to be axed over declining sales and the magazine's plugging of his website Popbitch.

Gossip columns over the weekend gave the founder and editor a taste of his own medicine by claiming Stevenson could be turfed out over declining sales at the Emap style bible and because of the magazine's "relentless plugging" of Popbitch, the internet gossip column that Stevenson's girlfriend still runs.

Reports claimed that Stevenson could be sacked any day. In the most recent set of magazine circulation figures released in August, The Face lost 10.6% of its circulation year on year, falling to 43,717. It is thought to have continued to lose ground in the six months since August. The next magazine ABCs are due out next week.

The Face was relaunched last summer following a 13% decline in 2002. Stevenson's previous roles include editor of dance music bible Mixmag and deputy editor on Heat magazine.

A spokesperson for Emap said that the reports are malicious gossip and completely unfounded.
