Emap debuts iTV-style ads in online video

LONDON - Emap Advertising is claiming a UK media first with the introduction of interactive advertising in streamed online videos, similar to interactive TV ads.

The technology, developed by a company called Adjustables, will be used first by an Xbox 360 'Halo 3' interactive ad to be carried on FHM Entertainment videos from September 10 to October 7.

A clickable logo, which will lead through to the official 'Halo 3' website will appear in the top right corner 10 seconds into the video stream. The campaign was planned and bought by Universal McCann.

Kevin McGarr, account manager at Universal McCann, said: "Reaching users as they consume video is one of the big challenges we face at the moment. This technology marks a big step forward in this area."

Adjustables' patent-pending technology makes it possible to display a spinning logo, banner, picture-in-picture or scrolling text as part of a video stream. The company is based in San Francisco and Rotterdam.

Bruce Daisley, digital sales director at Emap Advertising, said the technology opens up fantastic opportunities for Emap's advertisers.

Jan van Ottele, chief executive of Adjustables, said: "The great benefit of this technology for the viewer is that online videos can remain free of charge while the advertisements shown within them are relevant."
