Emap appoints editor for ailing men's title Arena

LONDON - Emap has appointed Giles Hattersley from the Sunday Times as editor of its ailing men's magazine Arena.

Hattersley, who takes over as editor of Arena and editor-in-chief of Arena Homme Plus, is 27 and has no magazine experience.

At the Sunday Times, he was chief interviewer for the paper, the youngest in its history, and prior to that he was a feature writer on News Review.

He joined the paper after graduating with an MA in fashion journalism from St Martins College of Art and Design and initially worked on the Style Section. In 2005, he was shortlisted for Young Journalist of the Year at the British Press Awards.

How long Hattersley has to turn around Arena is unclear. Emap parted company with its last editor, Will Drew, immediately before it issued another poor ABC.

For July-December the title reported a period-on-period decline of 13.9% to 34,556 copies.

Its year-on-year figure dropped 29.9%. The future for Arena now looks bleak.
